Favorite Painting
While sister S. was here over the holidays we visited the Delaware Art Museum. I hadn't been there in years and it was just as wonderful as I remembered it... in fact better. With the advent of smart phones I guess art museums have given up telling folks to not take photos, so I was able to get this one with one of my favorite paintings, "The Mermaid" by Howard Pyle. I have a repro of this that hangs in my home office. I love the idea of mermaids and feature them frequently in my short stories and jewelry narratives.

This always reminded me of a colorized variation of Aubrey Beardsley's Salome. I like the flow of this painting, but there was something about it that never reached me, unlike Beardsley's work. I never gave much thought to it, but with your stories, I can see why it has so much attraction for you.
